The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha said the Federal Government embarked on execution of numerous emergency ecological intervention projects across the country to benefit the people and to stop further degradation of the environment.

The SGF stated this at the commissioning and handing over of erosion control and road improvements work in Lugbe and flood control projects at Federal Government Boys College Wuye, Abuja.

He said 23 ecological intervention projects approved by the President for second quarter of 2018 was awarded by the Ecological Fund Office (EFO) and is expected to address the age long gully erosion and flooding in the community and school.

“The project was intended to provide culvets and reinforced concrete drainages to properly channel waste/ flood water into s asafe discharge point, thereby preventing erosion and flooding within the community and to protect lives and properties,” he said.

According to him, the project was extended to include road improvement works to ease pedestrian and vehicular access in the community, which is experiencing untold hardship due to environmental degradation arising from flood and erosion.

Having successfully completed the project, he said, the living standard of the people in the community will be enhanced.

The SGF also noted that with the project the school environment would be greatly safeguarded and reduce dangers to lives and properties of the staff and students and at the same time enhance learning.

Speaking, the Permanent Secretary of EFO Dr Habiba Lawal said the projects were initiated through urgent requests by Lugbe community and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education on behalf of the school authority to arrest the gully erosion and flooding in the community and the school.

Dr Lawal said the commissioning and handing over of the project to the benefiting community is expected to achieve a dual purpose of enabling host community to take over and exercise ownership to ensure its maintenance and sustainability

The resources which the federal government has committed to the project must not be allowed to go to waste, she said.
