Gombe engages vigilantes, hunters to tackle insecurity
The Gombe State Government said it is enlisting the support of the vigilante group and local hunters association to assist the conventional security agencies in maintaining law and order.
The state Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, stated this after a meeting with the leaders of the vigilante groups and local hunters in Gombe.
He said as a result of rise in insecurity in parts of the state, his administration sought for their support to complement the efforts of the security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements and activities.
Yahaya noted with concern that the state is now experiencing some security challenges, including thefts and kidnappings and therefore stressed the need for a robust community policing strategy that will curtail the insecurity challenges.
The governor added that, with Gombe being at the centre of the Northeast sub-region, “the state is witnessing high influx of people as a result of insurgency in some neighbouring states.”
He urged people of the state to cooperate with the vigilante groups and local hunters in carrying out their tasks.
He admonished members of the group to be guided by the laws and respect the superior directives of the constituted authority while carrying out their assinments.
Responding, the leader of the state chapter of Nigerian Hunters Association, Alhaji Danladi Sarkin Baka and the state Commandant of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Abdullahi Dan Asabe assured the governor of their readiness to offer their support.
