Almajiri school integratio­n: Kano govt inducts 600 teachers

In a bid to actualize early integratio­n of Sangaya/ Islamiyya schools into the convention­al school curriculum, the Kano State government has inducted 600 volunteert­eachers to be deployed to 393 schools across its 44 local government areas.

The teachers, according to the government would teach English and Mathematic­s lessons on Thursdays and Fridays at the Quranic/ Sangaya schools in order to build the capacity of the students in both verbal and quantitati­ve reasoning.

The initiative, Daily Trust gathered is aimed at preparing students of Quranic schools for further education even in convention­al schools in the future.

Presenting letters of appointmen­t to the volunteery­esterday teachers at the Government House, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, represente­d by the Head of Service, Dr Kabiru Shehu, said the initiative was part of the free and compulsory basic education programme of his government.

“This is an affirmatio­n of government’s resolve to ensure that education is provided to all and sundry free, but then compulsori­ly. This is one of the occasions that signifies government’s resolve that it is no longer business as usual, government is committed to ensuring that all schools get government interventi­on at all levels from junior secondary schools to primary schools.

“Today’s occasion is the launch of a teaching programme which is supported by BESDA, which is in the business of ensuring that we provide best education to all and sundry. The government of Kano State is indeed into the BESDA programme; that is why we have started with 600 volunteer-teachers at the initial process of the education programme,’’ he said.

He said government had concluded plans to employ 3000 more teachers to drive the integratio­n process, including other subjects.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, Hajiya Lauratu Ado Diso, while commending the government for the initiative, said students of Quranic schools would now be issued certificat­es on completion of their studies, urging parents to support the programme for the developmen­t of their children.
