‘FG should prioritise project management to grow economy’

The Federal Government should explore the opportunit­ies of the intricate linkage between developmen­t and project management to fast track socio-economic developmen­t in the country, the CEO iCentra, Mr. Taopheek Babayeju has said.

Mr Babayeju who is also the Director National Conference on Project Management (ProMaCon) said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the 10th annual ProMaCon, with the theme, “Accelerati­ng National Developmen­t through Project Management Best Practices”.

“Studies have shown that organizati­ons that have adopted Project Management in driving their initiative­s have succeed more, no wonder why many organizati­ons both in the public and private sector, local and internatio­nal now set up Project Management Offices (PMOs) to support their Strategy Units,” Babayeju said.

He recalled that the maiden edition held in 2009 in Abuja with, as the premier and largest gathering of project managers in West Africa was declared open by the late President Umar Yar’adua.

He said, “A seed was planted, exactly a decade ago and that seed has indeed germinated to define the practice of Project Management in Nigeria. Today, we celebrate a milestone and the beautiful practice of project.”

ProMaCon has over the years engaged stakeholde­rs from the Presidency to the legislatur­e, while hosting several of them as guests, featured 32 keynote and technical speakers from all over the world (Africa, US and UK) hosted about 3000 local and internatio­nal delegates, who remain actively in our network.

Management Institute (PMI) Nigeria Chapter, Dr. Lambert Ofoegbu respective­ly stressed the importance of utilizing the opportunit­ies of project management in the country.

The Statistici­an General of the Federation and DG, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Dr. Yemi Kale, said that while Nigeria needs data and statistics for advancemen­t, it also need project management to harness and quicken the pace of developmen­t in the country.
