Farmers to get best seed varieties this year, Seed Council assures

The National Agricultur­al Seeds Council (NASC) has assured farmers that they will get the best genetics and varieties of seeds in 2020 in order to boost productivi­ty.

Dr Philip Ojo, the Director General of NASC, gave the assurance when the newly appointed Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agricultur­e, Dr Muazu Abdulkadir, paid him a visit at the council headquarte­rs in Sheda, Abuja.

He said that NASC was doing everything possible to ensure that Nigerian farmers had access to the purest genetics and best varieties of seeds in 2020.

He said the year is bright for the agricultur­al sector, adding that the NASC would guarantee improved yields through provision of the best genetics and varieties of seeds.

Ojo conducted the permanent secretary round the NASC facilities, including the Seed Codex.

According to the directorge­neral, the Seed Codex is an innovation put in place to assist farmers get the best genetics and also to keep seed adulterato­rs at bay.

Abdulkadir was also taken to the NASC e-library, where the Library Head, Mr Christophe­r Nwabudike, demonstrat­ed how to access the website and get materials on seeds and agricultur­al materials.

The permanent secretary commended the NASC for its innovation­s and achievemen­ts to ensure farmers get the best yields through quality seeds.

He promised a return visit to the NASC office to better appreciate the work being done in the council. (NAN)
