- Titus Eleweke Awka

People of Ikenga in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state have petitioned the State Commissioner of Police John Abang over the release of two persons suspected to have shot 11 youths in the community.

Identifying the suspects as Amaeze Ezukama and Orakwue Ikebuilo, the petitioners through their lawyer, B. S Onuegbu Esq called on the commissioner of police to ensure that justice is done to avoid further occurrence of such incidence in the community.

According to the petition dated March 9, 2020, they expressed concern over the manner the two arrested suspects were released immediately without the DPO of Ogidi Police Station charging them to court, even when they were found with riffles.

According to a source, trouble started when the former President of Ikenga Ogidi, Hon. Amechi Ekume summoned a meeting to settle disputes between two warring groups in the community.

The source said on their way to the meeting, some youths were attacked by some people suspected to be camp members of one of the warning groups, who inflicted machete cuts on the victims.

The source further said the assailants subsequently went from house to house to further attack their perceived enemies.

Among those wounded during the attacks were Ndubuisi Nwabufo, Izuchukwu Oraka, Ikechukwu Achebe, Okwudili Achebe, Abuchi Iweka, Emeka Nrabalu, Onyinye Obianagha and Arinze Obiaku.

Daily Trust investigation revealed that immediately after the attacks, a community leader Rev. Dr. Emma Obianagha telephoned the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer who lured the two suspects, Amaeze Ezukama and Orakwue Ikebuilo to the police station where they were arrested and detained.

However, to the surprise of the community, the two suspects were released not long after the arrest.

The spoke person of Anambra police command Haruna Mohammed when contracted on phone said he was not aware of the petition or the incident and that he was hearing it for the first time.

He however said that the commissioner of police will give directive for proper investigation of the petition.
