COVID 19 : Katsina residents take precautions

- From Habibu Umar Aminu, Katsina

Residents of Katsina are waking up to the realities of COVID-19 as they now take precautionary measures while associating with friends and relations.

Arewa Trust Weekly reports that people have resorted to nodding their head in greeting from a distance or at meetings instead of the usual handshakes.

A resident, Mohammed Halilu, said “I’m very disturbed with this coronavirus disease. I mind my business these days, especially since Monday when the number of cases in the country began to escalate. We must all be serious.”

Similarly, shopping malls and supermarkets in the metropolis have started asking their customers to wash their hands and use sanitisers before entering. However no shop is using thermometer to measure the temperature of customers.

Also, some shops are yet to provide the sanitisers, which runs contrary to the directives of the state government.

Governor Aminu Masari on Monday ordered all supermarkets and shopping malls to provide sanitisers and thermometers for use by their customers. He said those who refused to comply would be sanctioned.

He said health officials will embarked on monitoring compliance, adding that government would do everything possible to protect the lives of its citizens.

At one of the major shops visited, our reporter observed a staff stationed at the gate with a bottle of sanitiser, although some of the customers refused to use it.

At popular cyber cafe in the city, security operatives were seen forcing customers to wash their hands before entry.

The state transport authority has also complied with the directive as passengers are given facemasks and made to use sanitisers before boarding vehicles.

The General Manager, Haruna Rigoji, said the authority wants to ensure the wellbeing of its customers.
