Traditional ruler wants FG to tackle erosion in his domain

- From Linus Effiong, Umuahia

The immediate past chairman, Umuahia North Traditional Rulers Council and traditional ruler of Oriendu Autonomous community, Umuahia North L.G.A, of Abia state, HRM Eze Pst. Philip Ajomiwe has called on the federal government to urgently address erosion problems across the Southeast zone.

Eze Ajomiwe, who made the call while conducting newsmen round two erosion sites, situated at Uhuala Ofeiyi, where a bridge linking Imo and Abia State was built, lamented that the erosion, if not promptly arrested, might cut off the link and defeat the purpose for which the bridge was constructed.

He said the bridge is very important to them because it is a quick getaway to Imo state, and further called on Abia and Imo state government to come to the rescue of his Oriendu community by bringing palliative measures to salvage the bridge from further caving in.

The traditional ruler lamented the damages and destructions caused by erosion across Southeast adding that “according to statistics Abia alone has up to 1000 active erosion sites”.

Eze Ajomiwe said many people have abandoned their homes to look for shelter elsewhere because their houses have caved in, adding that if nothing urgent was done more would be rendered homeless.

He said the bridge was constructed in 2004, adding that before the construction, people of his community, neighbouring Ihite-Uboma in Imo state had to travel to the town to board vehicles.
