Abuja teachers turn back pupils over minimum wage

- By Adam Umar

Primary school pupils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were yesterday turned back when they resumed to school from the long holiday imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The striking teachers who sent the pupils home are pressing for salary increment and they had issued a 7-day ultimatum which expired on Sunday.

Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT chapter, Stephen Knabayi, while responding to the Daily Trust inquiry over the development, lamented that, while the FCT minister approved and started implementation of the new national minimum wage in secondary schools, area council chairmen are yet to implement the minimum wage.

Daily Trust observed at LEA Primary School Dutsen Sokale that classrooms were empty as pupils were sent home by their teachers.
