Rashford strikes late as United sink PSG again ...Barca, Juve, Lazio also record victories

-

Marcus Rashford produced another late strike to sink Paris Saint-Germain as Manchester United beat last season’s runners-up 2-1 at the Parc des Princes in their Champions League groupstage opener on Tuesday.

The England striker, whose last-gasp penalty gave United a stunning victory over PSG Paris in the last 16 in 2019, smashed home low in the 87th minute as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side claimed a well-deserved three points.

They had taken a first-half lead behind closed doors in Paris courtesy of a retaken Bruno Fernandes penalty after United’s captain for the night had initially missed.

But it looked as though PSG would escape with a draw despite a poor performance after France striker Anthony Martial headed a Neymar corner into his own net 10 minutes after the restart in this Group H encounter.

In Istanbul, Manchester City loanee Angelino continued his excellent early-season form with two first-half goals as RB Leipzig strolled to a 2-0 win in their Champions League opener against Istanbul Basaksehir.

The Spaniard found the net for the third game in a row as Leipzig, unbeaten table toppers after four games in the Bundesliga, continued their winning ways on the European stage.

Elsewhere, Lionel Messi became the first player to score in 16 consecutive Champions League seasons as he guided 10man Barcelona to a 5-1 victory over Hungarian side Ferencvaros in their Group G opener.

Lazio also returned with a win over Dortmund as Ciro Immobile scored against his former club Borussia Dortmund in a 3-1 home victory marking their return to the Champions League group phase after a 13-year absence.

However, League 1 side Stade Rennais failed to make their dominance count on their debut as they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Krasnodar in Group E just as big money spenders, Chelsea were forced to 1-1 draw by Europa Cup holders Seveilla at Stamford Bridge.
