Govs to back NPC on data for planning

- By Francis Arinze Iloani

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has said that state governors would support the National Population Commission (NPC) to generate data for planning purposes.

Speaking when he received a delegation from the NPC, led by the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra, in Abuja recently, Governor Fayemi, urged all stakeholders to support the NPC in data generation for economic development.

“There is no short-cut to progress. If Nigeria is to succeed as a country, support from all stakeholders is key in reliable data generation and planning.”

The governor said the country needs census data for planning purposes and the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) would determine the success of the census.

The Executive Chairman of the NPC, Nasir Isa Kwarra, sought the support of state governors for the demarcation of the enumeration areas of the remaining 520 local government areas (LGAs) across the country in preparation for the national population and housing census.

Kwarra told Dr. Fayemi that so far, the Commission had demarcated 254 out of the 774 LGAs and would soon embark on a nationwide exercise to demarcate the remaining 520 LGAs.

“With the funds, which Mr. President recently approved for us, the nation will soon witness massive demarcation activity to complete the remaining 520 LGAs. That is why we are here to solicit the support of the governors both in terms of security and logistics,” Kwarra said.
