Imo judicial panel ends sitting, treats 150 petitions

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality in Imo state has ended its sitting with the panel receiving 150 petitions from aggrieved persons in the state.

Secretary of the panel, Isaac Oguzie, told our correspondent in an interview that all the complaints are being compiled and it's expected that the panel will make far reaching recommendations to the government.

The panel was set up in the aftermath of the mass protest by Nigerians over the alleged abuses by men of the disbanded State Anti-Robbery Squad.

Oguzie said that the members were painstaking in their assignments, and expressed the wish that the recommendations would be acceptable to all the parties.

"The commission has finished all the public hearings based on the petitions submitted. In all we received 150 petitions from aggrieved citizens across the state.

"The commission took oral evidence from all the petitioners and cross examined them. Also, all the persons mentioned in various petitions were invited and they gave evidence.

"The report is being compiled for onward submission to the government, " he added.
