Why we chose Kano for biennial convention — NGE

- From Clement A. Oloyede, Kano

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has explained that it chose Kano State as the host of the 2021 biennial convention to, among other reasons, bring editors closer to the North western part of the country.

The chairman of the guild’s local organising committee, Dr Sule Ya'u Sule, told Daily Trust that prior to this year, most of the guild’s annual conferences and biennial conventions were normally held in the Southern part of the country, notably Lagos and Port Harcourt.

“We felt as editors, we need to be educated and enlightened and go around to see things for ourselves especially with security issues in the North West, let them (colleagues in the Southern part) come and access what is happening,” he said.

According to him, to allay the fears of participants, especially those from the Southern part, adequate security measures have been put on ground, noting that despite the fact that Kano enjoys relative peace, the LOC has visited and secured the cooperation of all security agencies in the state.

Speaking on the theme of the convention: “The Media in COVID-19 Era: Challenges and Opportunities”, Sule said the Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere, Professor Umaru Pate, would be delivering a paper to educate editors on challenges and opportunities posed by the COVID-19 pandemic especially as it relates the media industry.

He said the guild will also be conducting its national election at the convention as well as discuss the state of the nation after which a communique would be issued.

Daily Trust reports that the biennial convention is scheduled for May 30 to June 2, 2021, and it is the first time it is being hosted by Kano State.
