Road crashes kill 279 in Ogun, Edo in 6 months

-

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) yesterday said road crashes in Ogun and Edo states have killed 279 persons between January and June this year.

Ogun State recorded 194 deaths due to road crashes while Edo State witnessed 85 during the period under review.

Speaking at a retreat in Abeokuta, Ogun State Sector Commander of FRSC, Ahmed Umar said 1,245 others sustained injuries in 614 road accidents recorded in six months as against 405 recorded in the same period in 2020.

He stated that most of the accidents occurred on the LagosIbadan expressway.

Umar attributed the causes of the accidents to bad road, wrongful overtaking, nonusage of seat belts, bad tyres and excessive speeding.

He urged motorists to drive cautiously and always maintain the required speed limit.

He disclosed that the command was working closely to organise ‘Special Intervention Patrol’ with Lagos and Oyo State to ensure routine patrol on the corridors.

Also, FRSC’s Sector

Commander in Edo State, Henry Benamaisia, said out of the 717 persons that were involved in the various accidents across the state, 85 died while 279 sustained injuries.

Benamaisia, in an interview with Daily Trust, said 24 persons died on January, 13 on February, 14 on March, 19 in April, four in May, and 11 in June.

He attributed the crashes to impatience, indiscipline, intolerance exhibited by motorists.

“We have noted that most of the accidents are as a result of over speeding and route violation,” he said.
