Banned Twitter causes uproar between NBBF and Amachere

- By David Ngobua

Twitter, which has been banned in Nigeria, is the cause of a raging face-off between the leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and a former General Manager of D’Tigress, Mactaben Amachere.

The former General Manager incurred the wrath of the NBBF on Thursday when she made tweets on the official handle of the women national basketball team, D’Tigress, that were seen as inciting

Amachere in the tweets called on the leadership of the NBBF to pay all allowances and bonuses owed D’Tigress players since 2017 when the Kida led board was elected.

However, in a statement issued yesterday, the sport federation described the tweets as a distraction and a mischievous attempt to bring the basketball federation into disrepute.

“The tweet, which was about the donations from Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank and Access Bank towards the team’s preparation, is ill-timed and in bad faith,” it reads in part.

NBBF President Engr. Musa Kida confirmed that Mactaben, who solely controls the Twitter handle, has refused to hand over the page to the federation.

“The national team or basketball belongs to nobody. Basketball in Nigeria is bigger than an individual or group of people who think without them success cannot be achieved,” said Kida.
