Cholera outbreak claims 30 lives in Jigawa

At least 30 persons have been confirmed dead following the outbreak of cholera in nine local government areas of Jigawa state.

This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Salisu Mu’azu, at a media briefing in Dutse on Monday

He confirmed that 2000 cases of the epidemic have so far been reported, noting that the first case was recorded in the last one month in Hadejia and Dutse before spreading to the other affected local government areas in the state

According to him “the outbreak was more pronounced in Dutse and Hadejia local government areas which he said was as a result of the flow of water from open spaces into wells and water outlets that the people used for domestic purposes.

The permanent secretary said the flow of water as a result of the beginning of rainfall that washed away faeces from humans into open wells and water from burst pipelines in Dutse which was also taken back into the tank that supplies the area with water.

He said the state government has directed the release of drugs at three centres of Hadejia, Dutse and Ringim local government areas to enable the victims to have an immediate medical attention free of charge.
