Remo Stars beat Abia Warriors 1-0 to reclaim top spot ...As Kwara United pull down Pillars in Ilorin

- By David Ngobua

High-riding Remo Stars stormed back to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) yesterday after they edged out visiting Abia Warriors 1-0 in Ikenne to amass 17 points from seven matches.

Before yesterday’s week 7 match, the other unbeaten side, Rivers United had moved to the top of the table with 15 points after an emphatic 3-1 away win against MFM on Wednesday at the Teslim

Balogun stadium Lagos.

However, a member of the CHAN Super Eagles, Dayo Ojo, who was on the score sheet last weekend when Remo Stars recorded their second away win of the season against Wikki Tourists scored the only goal in yesterday’s fixture to hand Remo Stars the maximum points against Abia Warriors and also end Rivers United’s brief reign at the top.

The diminutive and combative midfielder side-footed the ball home from a corner kick in the 63rd minute for Remo Stars’ fifth win of the season.

Remo Stars and Rivers United are the two unbeaten sides in the ongoing NPFL season.

Meanwhile, Kano Pillars’ misery in the league continued at the Ilorin Township stadium where they were beaten 1-0 by Kwara United.

After a scrappy 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in week 6, the former champions arrived Ilorin with the aim of getting at least a draw but Kabiru Balogun strike in the seventh minute of the second half was enough to send the ‘Masu gida’ boys back home empty handed.

The win came as a huge relief for the ‘Afonja Warriors’ who had suffered a humiliating 1-3 loss against Rivers United last weekend.

The league organisers have also rescheduled the remaining two week 7 matches as the ‘Oriental derby’ between Heartland and Enugu Rangers will be held today in Okigwe while former African champions, Enyimba host reigning NPFL champions, Akwa United on Wednesday, January 26.
