The Sun Newspapers on Saturday in Lagos conferred the Courage in Leadership Award on Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.

The special award was in recognition of the governor’s exemplary courage in leadership.

Zulum was represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Isa Hussaini Marte, accompanied by a delegation from the Mai Kanuribe (traditional ruler of Borno residents of Lagos) as well as senior staff of the Borno Liaison Office in Victoria Island.

The event, which was held at the Expo Convention Centre of Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, was the 19th edition of The Sun’s annual awards to celebrate exceptional Nigerians.

Dignitaries at the occasion included the Senate president, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who received an award as Political Icon of the year, 2021 and the governors of Lagos, Imo and Bauchi States who also received awards. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, accompanied his wife who received award for humanitarian activities. The first lady of Abia State was honoured as Most Supportive Governor’s Wife. There were other recipients.

In Zulum’s case, a video citation produced by The Sun, shown to guests, described and recognised him as a “quintessential leader whose courage in leadership has been clearly demonstrated and despite the daunting challenges of Boko Haram insurgency in the State, Zulum’s courage has remained unwavering”.

The video citation noted that “Zulum has maintained regular visits to high risk security areas for citizens’ needs assessments” to which he has responded with massive investments in resettlement houses for internally displaced persons and refugees as well as very meaningful and unique progresses on education through the construction of dozens of new schools of very high standard.

The citation showed some pictorial evidence of Zulum’s over 600 capital projects in less than three years as governor of Borno State.
