‘Kano, Zamfara yet to pass child rights law’
A report on the environmental impact assessment of the Child Rights Law across states in the North West carried out by the Ministry of Women Affairs has revealed that only Kano and Zamfara states are yet to pass the law.
Speaking at a two-day meeting convened in Kano for the report’s development, Deputy Director, Girl Child Development in the ministry, Mr Musa Aliyu Musa, appealed to the two states to also implement the law in the best interest of children.
The meeting which was attended by the state’s Director of Child Development and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) was held to review and finalise the report of the environmental impact assessment in the five North West states of Katsina, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and Zamfara carried out by Niphemy Solutions Ltd for the ministry.
Musa said the meeting was designed to document intervention activities carried out to promote the rights of children to survival, development, protection and participation.
He said, “Nigeria as a member of the
United Nations ratified its Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on March 21, 1991, and signed, as well as ratified the African Union Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (AUCRWC) in 2001, and as a state party to the convention, Nigeria is obliged to take all legislative and administrative measures required for its implementation.”
He explained that in compliance with the obligations, Nigeria enacted the Child Rights Act (CRA) in July, 2003, which domesticated the provisions of the UNCRC and AUCRWC.
