Ministry plans zonal sec schs basketball competition

The Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development is planning for a zonal youth basketball championship to be staged across the six geo-political zones beginning from June.

Last week, the federal government announced Nigeria’s withdrawal from international competitions in order to rebuild the game in the country.

A reliable source told Daily Trust that the ministry’s Grassroots Department will leverage on its six zonal coordinators to start the

weeks basketball competition amongst secondary schools in the country.

The source also disclosed that the competition will involve 12 teams, two for each zone.

The 12 teams will then converge on Abuja or Lagos for a one week national championship.

He said the competition will be tagged ‘Basketball Youth Talent Hunt’.

According to the source, in the next few days, the sports ministry would make further announcements on the plan for the development of the game in Nigeria.
