‘Blogger arrested over report on Ogun gov now in police custody’

- From Peter Moses, Abeokuta

An Ogun State based blogger, Olamilekan Hammed, arrested by the Department of State Services for allegedly publishing a story on Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has been transferred to the police custody.

The blogger reportedly published a report on Abiodun’s alleged criminal records in the United States.

His lawyer, Festus Ogun, said his client had been in detention since Friday after he honoured an invitation by the Ogun State command of the secret police.

He accused the governor of instigating his client’s arrest, adding that Abiodun had the right to challenge the publication in court instead of using the DSS to harass the reporter.

Ogun said when he visited DSS office in Abeokuta, he was denied access to the blogger.

However, on Tuesday morning, the lawyer in a statement said the blogger has now been transferred to the police custody.

When contacted, the police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he had not been briefed on the development.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kunle Somorin, told City & Crime “it’s not true that the governor is behind the arrest.”

Somorin added the governor should be counted out of the matter, saying “it’s a security matter. It is only the police or DSS that can answer questions on any arrest.”
