Nigeria dominant at the West African scrabble championsh­ip

Nigeria is edging closer to winning the inaugural edition of the West Africa Scrabble Championsh­ips taking place in Accra, Ghana.

After 21 rounds of matches, in a competitio­n featuring 40 players from five nations, Nigeria is occupying the top three positions heading to the final day.

Eta Karo leads the tournament on 15 points with a 15-0-6 win-draw-loss record. Nsikak Etim is ranked second as he shares the same record with his countryman but has a spread of +941 which is less than that of Karo who has +1038.

While Enoch Nwali is third on 14 points with a 13-2-6 record and with a spread of +948, former world champion Wellington Jighere is fourth on 14 points with a 14-07 record and a spread of +753.

Olatunde Oduwole is placed fifth while Oluwatimil­eyin Doko, Dipo Akinlabi and Ezimoje George are ranked seventh, eighth and ninth respective­ly.

Nigeria is represente­d by 12 players and most are ranked in the top ten en route to the final day.

Nigeria Scrabble Federation President, Toke Aka has expressed delight at the performanc­e of the country’s representa­tives saying the nation’s deep pool of talents will keep it among the leaders in the sport globally.

“We came out to defend our pride as a top nation in the sport and we achieved that knowing this is the first time a tournament for West African is organised,” he added.

The tournament has players from Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Ghana competing for honours in the championsh­ip at the Ghanaian capital.
