- By David Ngobua

The final events at the Zenith Bank sponsored Ikoyi Club Inter-primary schools swimming competition were aborted due to yesterday’s heavy downpour in Lagos.

The programme which serves as one of the key avenues for development of swimming in Nigeria was about to commence at the swimming section of the prestigious Ikoyi Club before the heavy rain began.

According to the Swimming Section chairman, Kunle Adeniji, “We had to make the difficult but right decision to postpone the event to ensure the safety of the swimmers and to maintain the integrity of the results documentation and collation.”

The chairman said a new date will be fixed soon for the races to be completed in the different categories.

President of the Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, Babatunde Fatayi-Wiliams said the decision was in line with international standards.

“It’s a heavy rain and it came with a storm which can trigger shock in the water. So we can’t afford to take the risk,” he said.

A total 14 were primary schools featured in the competition with 226 swimmers.

Adeniji commended Zenith Bank PLC for its continued support and thanked all participating schools, officials, parents and swimmers for participating and making the event an exciting one despite the rains.
