Table tennis: 2022 Africa club tourney underway in Lagos
A total of 16 African table tennis clubs made up of nine male and seven female players will compete in the Club Championships which serves-off today to May 25 at the Molade OkoyaThomas Hall of Teslim Balogun stadium in Lagos.
At the end of the club championship, a total of 48 players (28 men and 20 women) will then compete in the Africa Cup from May 26 to 28 at the same venue.
Ahead of the championship, the President of International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa, Khaled El-Salhy described Lagos as the nerve centre of table tennis in the continent following the successful hosting of several ITTF-sanctioned events.
He commended the Lagos State government for what they have done for table tennis as he said “The city has become the hub of table tennis because all players within and outside Africa are always looking forward to competing at the venue, especially with the huge spectators that most times support the players regardless of their teams.
“ITTF has now seen Lagos as one of the cities that they cannot ignore when it comes to staging top-class competition and for us in Africa, we are always confident that the state has the capacity to host major international tournaments.”
