Senate to states: No contributory scheme, no access to healthcare fund

- By Ojoma Akor

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, says states will not access the Basic Health Care Provision Fund if they do not have their own contributory health insurance schemes.

He was briefing reporters in Abuja yesterday on the new Health Insurance Act which made health insurance mandatory.

He said the National

Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act 2022 was geared towards ensuring Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all Nigerians.

The National Health Insurance Authority Bill, signed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, was sponsored by Oloriegbe.

Oloriegbe said the over 70 percent out of pocket expenses by Nigerians had result in deaths for those who could not afford to pay for health services.
