NEITI seeks oil, mining data for gender reporting

- By Simon Echewofun Sunday

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said it is creating frameworks that would boost data collection to improve reporting of gender and environment in the petroleum and mining sectors.

Speaking at the validation workshop in Abuja on Tuesday, the Executive Secretary/CEO of NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, said Nigeria had committed to improving the social and environmental impacts of extractive industry operations.

He called on relevant oil and gas institutions to provide NEITI with data on gender and environmental impact.

“With the implementation of data mainstreaming and systematic disclosure, the relevant institutions will begin to take on both responsibilities to generate and publish data in realtime. This will add significant value to transparency and accountability by further increasing the timeliness and relevance of data,” said Orji.

Also speaking, the Chairman National Stakeholders’ Working Group and NEITI Board, Olusegun Adekunle, lauded NEITI for promoting the noble principles of equity and sustainable development since it was created 20 years ago.

Adekunle said in 2019, resourceextracting countries committed to disclosing data and information on gender and the environment. In 2020, NEITI published the first data on gender participation and environmental practices in the petroleum and mining industries.

“We are called upon to ensure that the most vulnerable groups in our society are not only protected from the harmful effects of resource extraction but that they also enjoy the benefits.
