FG intervenes in 440 erosion, flood control sites

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, has said the federal government through the Ecological Project Office (EPO) and the Federal Ministry of Environmen­t has made 440 erosion and flood control interventi­ons across the six geo-political zones of the country.

She said the interventi­ons were meant to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of citizens.

Daily Trust can report that erosion and flooding are some of the environmen­tal challenges confrontin­g many communitie­s in the country.

The head of service, who spoke while commission­ing erosion and flood control works at Isa Bello Sali Housing Estate, Kurudu, Abuja, recently, said the project underscore­d President Muhammadu Buhari administra­tion’s sincerity of purpose and responsive­ness in tackling the challenges of citizens and making life more meaningful.

Yemi-Esan said: “For instance, between the year 2015 to date, the federal government, under the World Bank-assisted Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Projects (NEWMAP), has made erosion and flood control interventi­ons in over 103 sites, 67 of which have been completed while 36 are ongoing.

“In addition, available data provided by the Federal Ministry of Environmen­t further identifies 337 other erosion and flood control interventi­ons cutting across the six geo-political zones of the country.”

The Permanent Secretary of the EPO, Dr Habiba Lawal, said the project was executed to control erosion and flooding challenges as well as enhance the road infrastruc­ture in the estate.
