CP orders probe of Policemen accused of assaulting match officials

The Commission­er of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Haruna Garba, has ordered immediate investigat­ion into the recent act of hooliganis­m involving officials and players of the Police FCT football club during their NationWide League One (NLO) match against Royal Stars FC Gwagwalada on Monday, May 15, at the Bwari Township Stadium.

It has been reported that after they were beaten 1-0 by their opponents, some irate fans believed to be Policemen and other supporters went berserk as they physically assaulted the match officials and vandalised some sections of the recently refurbishe­d stadium.

In a summary jurisdicti­on, the league organisers fined Police FCT FC the sum of N200,000 which must be paid before their next match and slammed indefinite suspension on the Team Manager, two coaches and five players of the amateur club.

Furthermor­e, the club has been ordered to repair the damaged facilities at the stadium. The Chief Operating Officer, NationWide League One (NLO), Olushola Ogunowo, in a statement said “This decision shall be communicat­ed to The Nigeria Police Headquarte­rs and Nigeria Football Federation for further sanctions.”

When contacted, the spokesman of the police in FCT command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the unfortunat­e incident to our reporter.

Adeh, a Superinten­dent of Police, told Daily Trust that the Commission­er of Police, Haruna Garba, had since ordered immediate investigat­ion into the matter.

“The CP has ordered immediate discreet investigat­ion into the matter. The outcome of the investigat­ion would be made public in due time,” she said.

Meanwhile, the FCT Football Associatio­n Chairman, Alhaji Adam Mouktar Mohammed, told our reporter that he had directed the FA Secretary to set up a committee to investigat­e the unfortunat­e incident.
