Nasarawa Assembly Warns LG Chairmen Against Truancy, Absenteeism

-

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, has urged all council chairmen to always be in office to attend to issues affecting their councils.

Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, who is the chairman of the committee and member representing Lafia North constituency stated this during a meeting with local government chairmen in Lafia on Friday, saying it was for development to thrive at the grassroots.

He said that the meeting was aimed at theoritically assessing the achievements and challenges of the local government chairmen in the state.

“As I always advise, it will not be good for our democracy if chairmen are deliberately not staying in their offices.

“So, I want to advise you against absenteeism,” he said.

The chairman said that the committee would visit local government areas before the end of the month to assess the activities and performance of the council chairmen in the state.

“This is a normal routine meeting in order to assess your activities, progress and challenges with the view of correcting any abnormalities, if discovered.

“As the constitution is very clear on the regulations of local government councils activities by the house.

“Today, we want to know your achievements in theory as we are coming to your various local government areas before the end of the month to assess your activities.

“To see what you have achieved and to know your challenges so that we can tell the world what you have done so far and still doing,” he said.

The chairman promised effective synergy with the local government chairmen for the overall development of their councils.

“I want to assure you that we will continue to collaborate and synergise with you for the overall development of your councils and the state at large,” he said

Alkali also assured the state government of their support to boost grassroots development in the state.

Responding, Alhaji Aminu Maifata, Chairman, Association of Local Govermment Of Nigeria (ALGON) Chairman and Lafia Local Government Area, appreciated the committee for supporting the activities of local government councils to succeed in the state.
