UNBEATABLE SPORTS ACTION

- By Olusola ‘Jide @jide_olusola

Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 1-1 with Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday afternoon to book their place at Cameroon 2019.

Nigeria who had missed out on back-toback editions of the Africa Cup of Nations drew the first blood albeit an own goal from South Africa’s Buhle Mkhwanazi before the equaliser was created by Percy Tau who dummied the Eagles defenders to feed Lebo Mothiba for an easy tap in.

The opening stages of the second half were quiet as the heat and altitude began to take its toll on the players.

In search of an ‘assurance’ goal, Gernot Rohr took off an almost ineffective Kelechi Iheanacho for Isaac Success with 20 minutes remaining in the clock.

Shortly after, defender Kenneth Omeruo had the glorious chance to regain the lead from a free-kick but scoffed his header wide with the goal gaping.

The Super Eagles qualify with 10 points after five games and still have one more qualifying series to be played against Seychelles in March.

It will be recalled that the Nigerian side were beaten 2-0 in the first leg in Uyo

Either Libya or South Africa will join Nigeria from Group E depending on the outcome of the games in March 2019.

Both sides have friendly matches on Tuesday with Nigeria to host Uganda and South Africa entertaining Paraguay.
