Jigawa conducts mass wedding for orphaned girls
Jigawa State Government has spent over N90million for conducting a mass wedding of 270 orphaned girls.
The Special Adviser on Religious Affairs to the state governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, Mustapha Sale Kwalam, made the disclosure at Dutse Central Mosque, saying, 10 prospective couples were selected from each of the 27 local government councils of the state.
According to him, the mass wedding which was started in Dutse Local Government Area, would be replicated in each of the local governments, adding that the selection of the girls were purely on merit.
Kwalam stated that to be qualified for taking part in the mass wedding, a girl must be an orphan, must have a suitor that is ready to take her as wife and that on the other hand, the suitor must have an accommodation and a source livelihood.
He explained that after meeting up with the stipulated requirements, the couples were also subjected to compulsory HIV/AIDS screening saying, this was in consonant to the condition of marriage in Dutse Emirate.
