Sunday Trust - - FEVER PITCH - From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

Golfers from the six states of the Southwest of Nigeria yesterday kicked-off a golf tournament organised by the media trust, the publisher of the Daily Trust newspapers in honor of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The programme which kicked off at exactly 7:00am on Saturday at the Ibadan Golf club was the South West zonal qualifying tournament edition of the programme.

The commissioner of sports, Barristers Yomi Oke who represented the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi at the tee off noted that the state was quite happy about hosting the event.

Speaking with the Daily Trust correspondents, the captain of Ibadan golf club team, Mr. Olumide Oyediran described hosting the President Buhari tournament at Ibadan Golf club a privileged for the entire members of Ibadan golf club.

He said it was an opportunity to enjoy the spirit of comrado, love and wealth of experience with other golfers from the southwest states and beyond.

He said “Anytime you are hosting a region in a tournament, it is something that is prestigious because it is an opportunity for us to interact with members of golf club and to share ideas. You know in golf community, we have good commrado and we see ourselves as brothers and sisters.

“The most important thing about this is that we are organising this tournament in honor of the number one man of this country, in the person of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It is an honor for us to host this tournament regardless of our political affiliation in the club, President Buhari is still the president of our dear country and we are proud of that.

“Anytime you honor somebody who deserves honor because of the office such a person is holding or his achievements, it is always good.”

The Organising Secretary of the tournament, Mr. Bernard Nduka in his own remarks described the tee-off as wonderful and superb.

He said the last time such gathering was conveyed was over ten years ago, saying the tournament was an indication of president Buhari’s passion for sporting events, especially golf.

According to him, the coming together of the golfers’ family in the region was a wonderful experience which is worthy to be commended.

“Well, the kick off was wonderful because the last time we had such gathering was ten years ago. It is a very wonderful experience because we have our members from other southwest states to come together to enjoy a two-day tournament. This symbolises the president’s love, passion for sport especially golf sport and his readiness to take golf to the next level.”
