Court’s verdict on deregistration of parties good move

- Maxwell Obi writes from Awka, Anambara State

Arecent judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja which affirmed the powers of INEC to deregister underperforming political parties is welcome development.

During the last general election, INEC spent millions of naira producing bulky ballot papers due to the large number of registered political parties that needed to be printed on the ballot papers.

Funny enough, most of those parties could not win any election at the presidential, governorship, national a and state elections.

Why then should such parties continue to occupy space on the ballot papers?

Besides not being able to win any election, a number of the political parties deregistered do not have offices and structures as required by law.

It is a good thing they were deregistered by INEC as this would help in unnecessary waste of money featuring such parties on the ballot. assembly
