NERC urges consumers to cooperate with Discos during enumeration

- OPEOLUWANI AKINTAYO

Lagos -- The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has urged electricity consumers to cooperate with the electricity distribution companies during the enumeration exercise.

In a statement, the commission said doing so would aid the metering process in the country and also help with resolving customers' complaints.

NERC had directed all eleven Discos in the country to embark on a compulsory customer enumeration so as to know how many meters

were needed to bridge the nation's metering gap.

The commission had given a March-ending deadline for the completion of the exercise.

But, despite the expiration of the deadline, the commission is yet to announce the next action on defaulting Discos as there are no signs that the Discos had commenced or completed the exercise.

Instead, the commission and the Discos are currently concerned with licensing of Meter Assets Providers, MAPs.

NERC has currently only licensed MAPs for four Discos Abuja, Benin, Ikeja and Jos.

Meters rollout under the MAP

programme is expected to begin May 1 at these Discos.

The approved MAPs for the Abuja Disco are Mojec International Limited, Meron Consortium and Turbo Engineering Limited. They are to provide 487,000, 213,000 and 200,000 meters respectively while for Jos Disco, Triple 7 and Mojec International Limited consortium are to provide 500,000 meters.

For Ikeja Disco, Mojec International Limited was appointed to provide 399,790 meters, Consolidated Infrastructure Group Ltd, 397,922 meters, and New Hamshire Capital Ltd (276,699 meters) within the Ikeja Disco franchise.

Benin Disco appointed FLT Energy System Ltd, G-Unit Engineering Ltd, Inlaks Power Solution Ltd, Sabrud Consortium Nigeria Ltd and Turbo Energy Ltd to provide meters within its franchise.

MAPs are expected to charge a maximum of N36,991.50 for single phase meters and N67,055.85 for three phase meters. These costs are inclusive of supply, installation, maintenance and replacement of meters over their technical lives.
