Prevail on NPA to develop Rivers ports, Gov Wike tasks Osinbajo
Port Harcourt -- Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has charged Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to prevail on the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, to dredge the Rivers seaport routes in order to increase economic activities at the ports, which will generate employment.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Port Harcourt dockyard liquid waste management treatment plant constructed by African Circle Pollution Management Limited, Governor Wike accused the NPA of not being good neighbours to the Rivers State government.
Wike informed the vice president that NPA entered into an agreement with the state
government to construct the road leading to the Port Harcourt seaport, but later reneged on its commitment.
The governor urged the Executive Director, Marine and Operations in NPA, Mr. Sokonte Davies, to work with other officials of the agency to actualise the dredging of Rivers Port, while appealing for NPA's collaboration with the state government in creating the right environment for the state's development.
"Rivers seaports have to be dredged. Without the dredging of the waterway to this port, employment cannot be generated. I call on the Rivers son who is an executive director in NPA to work for the dredging of the waterway by NPA," he said.
Earlier, while commissioning the Port Harcourt Dockyard Liquid Waste Treatment Plant, Vice President Osinbajo said the project was in line with the build, operate and transfer agreement, BOTA, between African Circle and the Federal Government, for a period of 20 years.
Osibanjo said the commissioning was another opportunity for Nigeria to lead the way in the improvement of the environment, adding that the Federal Government will continue its partnership with Africa Circle Pollution Management Limited for the promotion of environmental protection and sanitation.
