- MKPOIKANA UDOMA

Port Harcourt — A total of 900 secondary school students from Egi in Rivers State have benefited from the 2022 computer-based proficiency training, organised by TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited for its host communities in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.

The benefitting schools include Comprehensive Secondary School, Ogbogu; Community Secondary School, Obagi; Government Comprehensive Secondary

School, Obite; and Community Secondary School, Amah.

Others are Community Secondary School, Erema; Community Secondary School, Obiozimini; Community Secondary School, Oboburu and Government Secondary School, Akabuka.

The training, according to the oil company, is part of its programme to promote the education of indigent students in its host communities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Egi

Communities’ computerbased proficiency training in Obite, the Managing Director of TotalEnergies, Mr Mike Sangster, said the training was imperative in order to prepare students in rural communities for computer-based exams like the UnifiedTertiary Matriculation Examination.

Sangster added that the training was one of the several initiatives that underline the company’s commitment to the development of communities where it operates.

He said: “The program was designed to prepare the final year students of government and community secondary schools for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

“We believe that a program like this will eliminate the phobia associated with the CBT

of the UTME and place students from our host communities at par, if not at a competitive edge with their counterparts who are in the cities.

“In this year’s edition, 900 students nominated from eight community and government secondary schools located in our host communities benefitted from the three-week training.”

Sangster represented at the event by the Manager, Capacity Development, Mr Jacob Ologe, urged the students to confidently apply what they have learnt in the training in the upcoming UTME.
