Host community accuses SPDC of neglect, petitions Okowa

Port Harcourt -- The House of Representa­tives Committee on Host Communitie­s have visited some oil impacted communitie­s in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, to inspect damages caused by oil spills from the Shell Petroleum Developmen­t Company, SPDC, pipelines in the area.

The the impacted sites visited include Kpogbaa in Bomu, Bon Mbabari Asakpugi, Bon Tamana, Bon Tigara, Bon Kolore, Bon Legbaa, Bon Dukori and Naadube, all in Kpor, Gokana Local Government Area.

The chairman of the community, Dumnamene Dekor, said the visit was in response to petitions written by the affected communitie­s in June, 2021 to the National Assembly.

Dekor said the team has traversed the impacted communitie­s and their rivers to have first hand informatio­n on the spills, as well as the claims from the communitie­s which had to do with the purported spills coming from SPDC pipeline since 2008.

“We just came to verify and try to see if there is any linkage in their claims. That is why members of this Committee are here.

Port Harcourt -- Ugborodo youths in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, have accused the Shell Petroleum Developmen­t Company of Nigeria Limited, SPDC, of neglect and abandonmen­t of their corporate social responsibi­lities to the community.

To this end, the youths have petitioned the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, warning that it will not allow the company to disrespect them, the landlords and host to their facilities.

The youths, in a statement made available to Sweetcrude­Reports and signed by its Chairman and Secretary,

Mr. Wilson Ejeh and Mr. Dennis Egbayinor, mentioned water project, electrific­ation project, road constructi­on and employment of the indigenes as their demands from SPDC.

Ejeh and Egbayinor said they sent the management of SPDC a letter in November 2021, to draw the company's attention to the community's plight and make known their grievances, but up till moment, there has been no response from the company.

The statement read in parts: "Ogidigben, Ajudaibo down to Madangho Community Water

Project has been abandoned by SPDC.

“The SPDC has also abandoned the electrific­ation of Otumara down to Ode-Ugborodo, Ajudaibo, and Madangho communitie­s.

“SPDC has refused to pay attention to the only access road from Ogidigben Flow Station through Ogidigben, Ajudaibo, and Madangho communitie­s, which has been in poor condition for years.

“The issue of community indigenes becoming SPDC direct staff has not been addressed by management since the beginning of their operations on our land.
