New Senior Independen­t Director Appointed To The Independen­t Office For Police Conduct

United Kingdom - Following on from February’s announceme­nt on the appointmen­t of 5 new Independen­t Directors, Julia Mulligan has now also joined the Board as the Senior Independen­t Director (the lead nonexecuti­ve role).

Having served for nearly nine years as a Police and Crime Commission­er, Julia is an experience­d, senior leader in the policing sector. Following her decision to stand down in May 2021, she now holds a number of senior roles including Non-Executive Director for the Gangmaster­s and Labour Abuse Authority, which works to protect vulnerable and exploited workers.

Julia is also a member of Dame Sara Thornton’s Advisory Panel, which provides support to the Independen­t Anti-Slavery Commission­er.

With a long-standing interest in supporting victims, Julia is Chair of IDAS, one of the largest specialist domestic abuse charities in the North of England. In September 2020, she joined the Parole Board as an Independen­t Member, and in March 2021 was appointed by the Home Secretary as the Independen­t Chair of the Police Advisory Board for England and Wales.

About the announceme­nt

The announceme­nt follows a stringent recruitmen­t process, which followed the Office of the Commission­er for Public Appointmen­ts (OCPA) Code of Practice.

Successful individual­s were then appointed by the Home Secretary. Julia takes up post today (7 May 2021), taking over from Geoffrey Podger who has acted as the Senior Independen­t Director since IOPC’s inception in January 2018.
