Tutor-General Challenges Students As Schools Resume For New Academic Session
Despite the arms embargo, the Myanmar military is still financed to buy ammunition to kill civilians instead of purchasing Covid-19 vaccines for the people. The dire human rights situation in Myanmar has been exploited by the military to continue dividing UN Member States which are bound by the resolutions of the Human Rights Council, the UNGA and the ILC, which clearly state that the wishes of the Myanmar people expressed in the electoral results last November must be respected and that democracy must be restored in Myanmar. We recall that the 2021 ILO resolution for a return to democracy and respect for fundamental rights in Myanmar specifically recommends to Member States that they support the restoration of democracy in Myanmar, including through the United Nations, other multilateral bodies, regional groupings and dialogues, and bilateral engagement, as appropriate. Nigerian workers support the recognition of the National Unity Government (NUG) as the legitimate government representing the people of Myanmar at the United National General Assembly (UNGA) taking place from 14 to 30 September 2021 in New York. We urge the Nigerian Government to support, at the next United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, the call of the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar to officially recognize the National Unity Government (NUG) as the legitimate government representing the people of Myanmar. Recognition of the NUG by individual governments worldwide, and at the UNGA in particular, is crucial in order to mount pressure on the military junta to stop the violent repression of the people, to return power to a civilian democratic government, to facilitate access to the humanitarian aid inside Myanmar, and to resolve the Rohingya crisis. In addition, we call on our government for bilateral recognition of the NUG, following the example of the Czech Republic and a growing number of Western and Asian countries. We would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you in the near future to discuss this matter more in depth. Please accept the renewed assurances of our highest esteem. Comrade Ayuba Wabba, mni President
The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District I, Mrs. Titilayo Solarin (standing) addressing the students of the District on resumption for a new academic session on Monday in Agege. The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 1, Mrs. Titilayo Solarin, has challenged students within the district to stay committed to their studies in order to excel as a new academic session commenced on Monday in public and private schools across the State. Addressing students, teachers and parents at a brief welcome back event at the Government Secondary School, Agege, Lagos, Mrs. Solarin implored parents to be steadfast in the development of their children by prioritising their upbringing, especially during West African Examinations WAEC. Her words: “Parents should play their roles effectively to ensure that their children excel in life. They should attend ‘Open-Day’ to monitor how their children are faring, buy necessary textbooks for them and be directly involved in the learning activities of their children”. She also advised the teachers to invest in personal development to complement the capacity enhancement programmes already initiated by the State Government for all teachers in public schools, noting that there would be several academic competitions during this session. The TG/PS underscored the need for students and teachers to be wellprepared to win laurels from the competitions, saying “I want to encourage our school administrators and teachers to start preparing ahead by organising inter-school debates among themselves knowing that there is no gain, without pain, hence they should sacrifice today, to enjoy tomorrow”. She thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support to the education sector, through the provision of new school structures, renovation of existing ones, and equipping laboratories and libraries public schools, stressing that there are no more excuses for laxity or nonperformance by anyone in government-owned schools. Solarin also cautioned against the abuse of internet usage, enjoining everyone to use it wisely and for good reasons, pointing out that as much as the internet provides an avenue for learning, its abuse can also stand as a hindrance to learning. A Principal of one of the schools in the District, Mrs. Olamide Adewale, solicited the cooperation of parents in monitoring their children alongside the school authority, noting that such collaboration helps instil morals in students. She expressed hope that with the level of the teachers’ preparedness to impart knowledge, the new academic session would be better than the previous ones in terms of performance. As part of the resumption day exercise, the TG/PS alongside some other officials of the District inspected school classrooms and expressed satisfaction with the turnout of the students despite the rains, maintaining that the students demonstrated a high sense of commitment on the first day of resumption.
