Boko Haram attacked Dzur village leaving eight persons dead. The insurgents also abducted 80 girls and women in Adamawa State. Older women in the group were released the following day

The first abortion clinic in Ireland opened in Belfast, sparking protests by conservati­ves from both the Catholic and Protestant sides of Northern Ireland.

• 2013 - Nigeria

King Emere Godwin Bebe Okpabi filed a lawsuit in a U.S. court, seeking $1 billion from Royal Dutch Shell to compensate for decades of pollution that sickened the people of Ogale in Eleme local council of Rivers State.

• 2011 - Liberia

Ex-warlord Prince Johnson, who came third in the presidenti­al polls, announced he would back Nobel peace laureate and incumbent President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in a run-off election against George Weah.

• 2008 - Zimbabwe

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai characteri­zed failed talks to form a unity government with President Robert Mugabe as "a monologue" saying the veteran ruler refused to compromise on the allocation of key ministries.

• 2007-South Africa

South African reggae star Lucky Dube (43) was shot in an apparent carjacking attempt in Johannesbu­rg's Rosettenvi­lle suburb. He died as he tried to drive away and crashed into a car and a tree. On Oct 21 police arrested five men in the killing.

• 2007 - Pakistan

Benazir Bhutto made a dramatic return to Pakistan, ending eight years of exile to reclaim a share of power with the country's Us-backed military leader.there was a suicide attack on her motorcade, which killed 139 and wounded 450 more.

• 1942 - Germany

Hitler ordered all Allied commandos encountere­d in Europe and Africa to be killed without trial.
