CD urges Obiano to conduct council polls
AGROUP, Campaign for Democracy (CD), in Anambra State, has urged Governor Willie Obiano to conduct chairmanship and councillorship elections in the 21 local councils of the state.
The group maintained that the polls would help to institute local government autonomy in the state.
It also warned members of the state House of Assembly that it would no longer tolerate their action in working to jeopardize local government autonomy by giving constant approval for extension of tenures of the incumbent chairmen of transition committees.
In a five-point communiqué, jointly signed by the Chairman, Comrade Nnadi E. Philip and Financial Secretary, Unah Zaccheaus, CD contend- ed that Anambra State in particular and Nigeria in general cannot be fully democratised without local government autonomy which is the third tier of the government and closest to the grassroots.
CD also pledged to sensitise and mobilise the electorate against some elected officials, particularly legislators who have failed their respective constituencies through their abysmal performances
