Police deploy 10,000 personnel for Edo poll

Nasarawa council election to cost N950 million

AHEAD of tomorrow’s local council election in Edo State, the police said they have deployed no fewer than 10, 000 officers for the exercise. The police personnel would cover all polling units, thee do State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) and all entry points to the state.

The deployment follow the defection of former President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and thousands of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, told

Theguardian that his men were ready for a free, fair and credible exercise in the state.

The State APC Chairman, Anselm Ojezua, said PDP’S decision to boycott the election was a death knell for the party.

Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole urged the people to remain positive about the state and the country under President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that Nigeria’s potential of becoming great outweighs the challenges the country was facing.

Also, Governor Godwin Obaseki said the chairmen and councillors were carefully chosen to give the state a new crop of leaders who would replicate what his administration was doing in the state.

Meanwhile, the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) has approved N950 million for the conduct of the forthcoming local council election in the state.

Acting chairman of NASIEC, Aliyu Mohammed Dogara, at a press conference yesterday in Lafia, said Governor Tanko Almakura’s approval of the fund marked the beginning of the election process in the state.
