We mustn’t celebrate another anniversary, Dogara cautions

Reps probe Chibok girls’ abduction four years after

- •From Juliet Akoje, Abuja

THE House of Representatives yesterday set up an ad hoc committee to trace the circumstances leading to the abduction and non-release of the remaining 112 Chibok school girls from Borno State four years after.

It urged the executive arm of government to protect lives and property , especially school children.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion on the fourth anniversar y of the abduction sponsored by Asabe Bashir (APC Borno) under matters of urgent public importance.

The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, urged the Federal Government to ensure that the country does not mark another anniversary without the rest girls not uniting with their families. He said: “We don’t want to have another anniversar y without the girls being reunited with their families. As long as the last surviving girl (Leah Sharibu of Dapchi abduction) has not been reunited with her family, the truth is that we haven’t done anything. Next, we will not be celebrating the anniversary of girls still in captivity.”

Bashir had reminded the lower chamber of the National Assembly that April 14 this year marked the fourth anniversary of the 219 students that were kidnapped from their school, Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State on April 14, 2014, adding that 112 of them were yet to be rescued.

Picturing their continued hardship, slavery, molestation, abuse and forceful marriage in the hands of their abductors, Nicholas Ossai (PDP Delta) said the issue of must be well addressed.

He said; “We have passed resolutions several times both at the Senate and the House of Representatives but at the end of the day, the resolutions are not adequately implemented. It is high time people knew they (relevant authorities) are not doing enough. This issue of Chibok girls must be addressed.”

Diri Dounye (PDP Bayelsa) noted: “We have been told severally that Boko Haram has been technically defeated. This House should invite all heads of security agencies to tell Nigerians the truth about the remaining Chibok and Dapchi girls.”
