Indomie National Spelling Bee Crowns 2018 Champion

ASTUDENT of the Cherryfield College Abuja, Chigozirim Ude-ibe has been crowned the overall winner of this year’s Indomie National Spelling Bee contest. She took home a cash prize of N500, 000, a trophy, school bag, dictionary, souvenirs and an allexpense paid trip to represent Nigeria at the National Final Scripps Spelling Bee contest in Washington DC USA, with one year supply of Indomie noodles.

13-year-old Rozey Zeenat of Excellent Foundation College took second position while 11-year-old Obembe Eyitayo David of Deeper Life High School, Bayelsa came third. They were rewarded with the sum of 250,000 and 150,000 respectively as well as a year’s supply of Indomie noodles, school bags and a dictionary, while the three teachers of the winners went home with cheques of 100,000, 80,000 and 70,000 respectively.

The spelling competition had 5,000 students from var- ious schools across the country out of which 26 spellers from Lagos, Jos, Delta, and Abuja qualified for the grand finale.

The championship word was ‘Coccyx.’

The competition was designed to inspire reading among youngsters and teach students how to use the English language effectively. This will in turn help in the identification and pronunciation of new words. The Director of Young Educators Foundation, Akin Olu-philips, the organizer and programs director for the competition revealed that the spelling Bee is a good platform to imbibe a healthy competitive culture in young children. He appealed to parents to encourage their children to read more and is hopeful that this year’s winner would win at the World Stage Competition.
