THE Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) has charged countries across the globe to adopt effective legal and judicial system for increased socioeconomic development.

The group, which aims at promoting sustainable economic growth and social justice in the African region gathered legal experts and fellows at its public lecture, saying the judiciary should be accorded respect, resources and strengthened to enable it perform its functions effectively.

Speaking during the 2017/2018 lecture at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, immediate past Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Georgina Wood (rtd), stressed the importance of promoting governance based on the rule of law, as well as a free, fair and impartial administration of justice.

At the lecture with the theme: Theruleoflaw, Thepromotionof Sustainabledevelopment Andghana’sexperience:a Viewfromthebench, the AIG fellow explained that every country’s laws immeasurably contribute and facilitate sustainable development.

“The moderating influence of the judiciary on the more political branch- es is the basis of constitutional stability and balance, providing the needed conducive environment for sound economic growth and better life for all,” she said.

Founder and Chairman of the group, Aigboje AigImoukhuede, said Africa’s poor record of public sector governance had prevented the continent from achieving its true potential.

He reassured of AIG’S vision to be a catalyst for the emergence of a highperforming public sector in Africa.
