New DPO takes over at National Assembly

ANEW Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Abdullahi Sambo, has taken over security at the National Assembly.

He replaced the erstwhile DPO, Abdul Sulu-gambari, who was redeployed on Saturday to Adamawa State

Sulu-gambari did the handing over in mufti at about 1:00p.m at the police designated office at the lobby of the National Assembly.

The new DPO was however in uniform with official escorts.

Though the former DPO declined granting interview to journalists who witnessed the development, he commended the National Assembly for the cooperation he got while he was in charge.

Theguardian learnt that Sulu-gambari’s redeployment is not unconnected with the submissions he made to the National Assembly ad- hoc committee on Senate invasion and Mace theft of May 18.

The EX-DPO had succeeded in apprehending some of the hoodlums who carried out the invasion and mace theft, over the suspension of the then suspended Senator Ovie Omo- Agege.

He had also allegedly made some revelations to the Senator Bala Ibn Na’allahled committee, which was jointly set up by the two chambers to investigate the invasion.

According to the committee at its sitting last Wednesday, a representative of the Inspector General of Police, Abu Sani explained that the former DPO’S statement indicated that the arrested hoodlums had made confessional statements that were with the Force Headquarters.

But Abu in his response, said the arrested invaders were in the custody of the FCT Police Command and that the statements written by them had no serious link with the mace snatcher who is still at large.

Sources said the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, felt that the former DPO went too far in revealing some security information during his testimony before the committee.
