Kings College, Queens dominate seventh Lagos First Generation Heritage Colleges Games

KINGS College and their girls’ counterpar­ts, Queens College yesterday won the seventh edition of the Lagos First Generation Heritage Colleges Games (LAFGHECA) held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. The competitio­n featured Kings College Lagos, Queens College Lagos, and St. Finbarr’s College Akoka, amongst others, whose students came out to cheer their stars as they participat­ed in various events like short put, javelin, discuss, high jump, long jump, relay race, 1500m, 800m, 400m, 200m and 100m races. Kings College topped the table with six gold medals and two silver medals, followed by Federal Government College, Lagos with five gold, four sliver and two bronze medals, while CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos came third with two gold, three sliver and three bronze medals.

Winners for the girls category, Queens College Lagos, took five gold, five silver and four bronze medals, with second position going to Federal Science and Technology College, Yaba with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals, while Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos came third with three gold and three silver medals. Speaking at the occasion, the chairman, Planning Committee and Principal, St. Finbarr’s College, Mr. Biyibi V. E. said the LAFGHECA was aimed at promoting heritage values and using a friendly intercolle­giate games to promote gender equity, sportsmans­hip, sound academic standards and competitiv­e equity. He urged all athletes, coaches and officials to key into the broad visions of using sports to promote good health in all ramificati­ons.

Also speaking the chairperso­n, LAFGHECA, Alhaja R. O. Yussuf expressed her delight with the students’ performanc­e and called on tertiary institutio­ns to come down to the grassroots to pick young talents. She also solicited for sponsorshi­p from corporate bodies to sponsor them and key into their programmes. Speaking with

chairman, BOT LAFGHECA, Otunba Dele Olapeju said the event was aimed at catching them young.

He urged sports administra­tors to scout for young talents at school sports venues, adding that many talented athletes could be discovered at the grassroots.
