- By Gbenga Akinfenwa

THE Lagos State government yesterday paid a total sum of N280 million to dependants of 110 of its deceased staff, who died in active service in 2017, across the state. Of the total beneficiaries, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) got the highest number with 57 beneficiaries, while local government workers were 53 beneficiaries.

During the presentation of the first phase of the 2018 insurance benefits in Alausa, Ikeja, in conjunction with LASACO Assurance Plc, the Commissioner for Local Government & Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, disclosed that the disbursement is part of the present administration’s commitment towards the wellbeing of the entire workforce, while serving and also paying necessary dues to their families after their demise.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Tola Padonu, Folami said in 2017, 145 beneficiaries of the deceased staff of SUBEB and the local councils were paid their dues when due.

“Let me express my grati- tude to our governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, for being mindful of the plight of the dependants of the deceased staff and his commitment to the prompt payment of premium, which has enable today’s presentation possible with the objective of ameliorating the suffering of the dependants,” Folami said.

In his speech, Deputy Managing Director, LASACO Assurance Plc, Rasaq Abiodun, who said his company has been at the forefront of the payment in the last four years, said it has distributed about N1.5 billion to almost 600 beneficiaries. He noted that the scheme is done in two phases yearly, with another phase scheduled for November.

“N280 million is paid now and based on our compilation in office and existing correspondence between us and the insured, nothing less than N300 million would be distributed for the second phase.” One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Sunday Chukwemozie, husband of the late Elizabeth Chukwemozie, a teacher of Mushin-isolo Road Primary School, Mushin, said it is sad that his wife who worked for the money has gone, saying despite all things he is thankful to God.
