Nigeria beat Cameroun 7-0, qualify for SATUC World Cup semifinals
NIGERIA yesterday defeated Cameroun 7- 0 to qualify for the semifinals of the SATUC World Cup, which is holding in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Nigeria, which is represented by a team from the Minna- based John Utaka Foundation, is the first side from the country to take part in the competition designed for underprivileged children between the ages of 15 and 16 years.
The team won their first match against Syria 7-1, with Abidemi Salau scoring the tournament’s first hattrick to make him the hot candidate for the highest goal scorer award.
The Nigerians won their second match against fellow Africans, Morocco 4-2 to book a quarterfinal ticket before thrashing Cameroun 7-0 yesterday to qualify for the semifinal of the competition.
Reacting to the result of the quarterfinal match, Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello urged the team to strive to win the tournament for Nigeria.
Bello told the team that Nigerians were waiting for them to win the trophy and prove to other less privileged youths that there are more fruitful avenues to exercise their abundant energy than taking to crime. Speaking on the championship, John Utaka Foundation Football Team Coordinator, Usman Chata said the team was determined to write Nigeria’s name in gold in Bulgaria.
“The boys have vowed to win the competition and make Nigeria proud. With the determination the boys have shown, I am sure they will come back with the trophy,” he said.
In the other matches played yesterday, Bulgaria beat Bosnia 5-2, Liberia defeated Cambodia 3- 2, just as Morocco beat Mexico 3-2.
