Indian community donates blood to mark Gandhi’s 150th birthday

TOcommemorate the 150th birthday anniversary of legendary peacemaker and nationalist, Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian community in the country set up a blood donation camp in Lagos State.

The event, organised by the Indian Professionals Forum, Indian Cultural Association, Rotary Club of Lagos Island and the Rotary Club of Lagos Palmgrove Estate, was held at the Indian High Commission, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Tagged ‘Spare only 15 minutes to save lives: A single pint can save three lives,’ Assistant District Governor, and Chairman, District 9110 Blood Donation, Ramesh Biswal, described Ghandi as a servant of all humanity.

Biswal, who stressed the importance of donating blood to save lives, bemoaned the acute shortage of blood in various blood banks in the country. According to him, hundreds of lives are lost due to unavailability of correct blood group at the right time.

He said: “For the past few years, the Rotary Clubs of Lagos Palmgrove Estate and Lagos Island have made it their mission to constantly donate blood and also create awareness regarding this vital donation that does not cost the donor any financial loss.”

The late Ghandi, born on October 2, 1869, was a proponent of the philosophy of nonviolence and peaceful protests. He led India to attain independence in 1947 before he later fell to an assassin’s bullet on January 30, 1948.
